A Day at the Capitol provides an opportunity for us to come together and share with state lawmakers about how we address student barriers to learning and academic success in cost-effective ways. This is a professional development opportunity, not a political lobby day. This year our Keynote Speaker is Jordan Mix from Iowa Safe Schools, speaking on Hope Is a Practice: Supporting Students When the System Falters. When laws shift and protections erode, it can feel as though the ground beneath our work is no longer steady. For Iowa’s school social workers and psychologists, SF 496 has introduced new barriers to ethical, student-centered care—especially for LGBTQ youth. This keynote offers space to name that grief and frustration while also reclaiming hope as an intentional, collective practice.
